Hello Friends,
Happy Friday
I find myself today back in the same buzzy café as a couple of days ago, sipping hot cappuccino and searching for clarity. Trying to find my way back to all the trains of thought that made sense before the school Easter holidays, but now feel like nonsense.
The same thing every school holiday. Never any easier, always exasperating.
While I spend some more time putting my brain back together — and figure out what it was I wanted to say before I was rudely interrupted by parental responsibilities — I have a TV recommendation for you this week.
TV recommendations from me are rare, I know. Since my children got too old to send to bed at 7:30pm, my own TV consumption has dwindled to nearly zero. These days, I’m the one going to bed at 7:30pm.
I’m not complaining though — I enjoy it. It’s boring to admit, but the early nights help my brain work better.
Last week, however, my husband took the kids to the in-laws for a couple of days.
Two whole days of age-restriction-free TV. Bliss.
I nearly didn’t watch anything — there’s so much choice, it’s overwhelming. Paralysing.
But by chance, I’d seen someone sharing colour palettes based on Severance (on Apple TV) a few days earlier, so I went with that. A recommendation based on style with no regard for substance — what could possibly go wrong?
Oh. My. God.
It’s incredible and I am obsessed.
It’s my favourite kind of genre. Not hardcore sci-fi — there are no aliens or space travel — I guess you’d call it speculative. There’s weird stuff. It plays with time. It gets philosophical, asking questions like: Who are you, really? Most of the time you’re unsure what the hell is going on — it’s perfection.
Maybe it’s because I grew up on a diet of shows like Quantum Leap, The X-Files, and Twin Peaks, in an era where there was very little age-appropriate programming. You had no choice but to watch things not entirely meant for you.
And I’m grateful for that. Growing up with fewer options gave me the things I love now. I wouldn’t be who I am without those shows.
In fact, maybe I’m damaging my children’s future taste by only letting them watch age-appropriate stuff?
Maybe they should be watching more weird, existential content.
Maybe we all should.
Speculative might read as “sci-fi,” but in reality, it’s totally human. I mean, time may be linear according to textbooks — but in our heads, we spend just as much time regretting the past and feeling anxious about the future as we do in the present.
Actually, being present is probably where we spend the least amount of time.
Anyway — five stars. Ten out of ten. Highly recommend Severance.
And I’m now desperately hunting for pockets of child-free time so I can start season two.
Until next week.
Wishing you all a wonderful weekend.
