Hello Friends,
Happy Friday
Right now I’m in a coffee shop. Coat and scarf still on. Half a cappuccino left.
Wishing I was on a plane to somewhere hot — or maybe on a long, meandering train ride to nowhere in particular.
I think my subconscious is trying to tell me something: I need a rest.
Which is, of course, the opposite of what my Fitbit is telling me.
According to that little tyrant, I should be doing more.
I used to have a love-hate relationship with my Fitbit.
Lately, it’s veered toward just… hate.
The Cardio Load™ feature gives off serious “needs to try harder” school report vibes. And frankly, I do not approve.
I’ve had a cold this week — the cotton wool–headed, attached-to-a-box-of-tissues, just-want-to-lie-down kind.
Understandably, when you’re sick, you don’t tend to do much — especially not exercise.
If you’re a man, you might roam around the house moaning to any living object that will listen, about how terrible you feel and how you think you might, possibly, be dying.
If you’re a woman, you do all the things you normally do… just with extra layers of existential rage.
Well — all the things except exercise.
This, as you can imagine, upsets Fitbit.
“Do more,” it says. “You’re not doing enough.”
“You’re in danger of under-training.”
How dare you rest.
Maybe it’s my germ-addled brain, but I’m starting to suspect the tech bros have infiltrated my home.
They’ve attached themselves to my wrist and taken it upon themselves to remind me — daily, hourly — that I should be crushing it at all times.
I don’t know why this bothers me as much as it does.
I’ve rested anyway, despite what the data says.
And I’m 90% okay with that.
But then there’s that 10%…
That annoying little whisper: You’re not doing enough. You’re falling behind. Try harder.
Giving yourself permission to rest is hard.
Maybe that’s why we daydream about holidays — the ultimate “get out of jail free” card. The one socially sanctioned form of rest.
The only time we really feel allowed to stop.
Unfortunately, there’s no holiday on the immediate horizon for me.
Just this coffee shop, this cappuccino, and the possibility of ignoring my Fitbit altogether.
Or maybe throwing it in the bin.
Until next week.
Wishing you all a wonderful weekend.
Becca x
Feel better. Listening to your body is more important than your Fitbit. As you know!! Take good care. X
I’ve never had a Fitbit for this very reason. I do have a habit tracker which helps me just to notice and prompt me to do helpful things each day, but not to best myself up if I skip something. I haven’t had a coffee shop sit for ages so you’ve inspired me to do this, thank you! ☕️ rest and relaxation are essential, not optional. 🙏🏻
